5 Questions for the Love Canal Panel

  1. Why do you think the area is safe/unsafe?
  2. Even after 30 or 40 years are chemicals still in the air, water, or land?
  3. Would you ever live in the Love Canal area or somewhere in a close proximity to it?
  4. If this disaster were to happen again, do you think that people will come back to the area?
  5. Would the toxic waste be able to come up from the ground again after a long series or rain and snow fall?
1.) What caused the toxic waste to begin being pushed to the surface?
2.) What are some of the health hazards associated with the chemicals dumped there?
3.) Besides humans how are other parts of the ecosystem affected by this?

1) The toxic waste began to push up to the surface in 1977 after it had rained and snowed a lot. The water started to get soaked up by the ground which made the underground area very wet, which caused all the toxins to ooze up the the surface of the earth in a very think blackish substance.

2) There are many health hazards, like there were over 400 LETHAL chemicals found in the air water and land around Love Canal, which includes deadly dioxin and lead.

3) The animals in the area were effected, too. After a very wet year the toxins started flowing into some creeks near by, and some animals drank the toxins or sawm in them. Some parts of the toxic wasted turned into gas and went into the air and never left, so people living in Niagara Falls, New York still can be effected by these chemicals.

Hazards of Oil Dispersants

After watching the video, and reading the article we learned that the dispersants can extremely harm the animals and other vegetation around it. Some if the physical effects are of the dispersants and oil are sickness, mutations, internal bleeding, brain damage, skin damage, organ damage, and cancer.

Yes,it does because the oil and dispersants are way more toxic together then either of them are separately.

I think that the chemical dispersants are worse because it's very toxic and it mixes with the oil to make the water more toxic therefore killing more sea life.
